Let’s Make Pittsburgh the Most Livable City for All
Fireman Creative just finished producing a series of public service announcements on fair housing for the City of Pittsburgh’s Commission on Human Relations. The PSAs stress the importance of not discriminating based on race, ability or sexual orientation.
On April 11, 1968, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was put into law. It prohibited housing discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, sex, handicap and family status. When the newly-signed act’s one year anniversary came around in April of 1969, the country had made substantial progress in fair housing practices. To celebrate, the Department of Housing and Urban Development hosted a gala event in New York City, and in the years since, April has become Fair Housing Month.
Pittsburgh is ahead of the curve when it comes to advocating for fair housing, but unfortunately housing discrimination remains an ongoing problem.
The city was the third in the country behind New York and Chicago to pass housing discrimination laws. While the federal government does not have a law forbidding discrimination based on sexual orientation, both Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh have legislation outlawing this discrimination.
Check out the PSAs on the Commission on Human Relations’ Youtube page and share them on social media. Together, we can make Pittsburgh the most livable city for all.
